The Milwaukee Brewers lead the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 in the World Series after recording 10 runs on 16 hits in a 10-1 victory on Monday.
Jackson Chourio produced four hits in Game 3, raising his World Series average to .571. The 22-year-old shortstop also scored two runs and drove in one. His performance included a leadoff single, singles in his next two at-bats, and a double in the fifth inning. That fifth-inning hit was recorded at 99 mph, the softest contact of his four hits. The Rays managed one run on three hits over nine innings, including a ninth-inning score that arrived after the game was effectively decided.
Chourio became the youngest player with a four-hit World Series game since Joe Garagiola in 1946. He also stole a base in Game 3, giving him three steals in the current postseason. Through three games, he has hit two home runs. In Game 2, he threw out a baserunner at home plate to preserve a lead. The Brewers have won seven consecutive postseason games since the start of the NLCS. A win in Game 4 would make them the first team in MLB history to start a postseason run 8-0.
Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy called Chourio a total player who understands the discipline required to improve. Murphy compared Chourio's work ethic to Kobe Bryant, noting that Chourio is coming into his own. Chourio said he treated each at-bat in Game 3 as if it could be his last. He focused on getting on base to allow runners behind him to score.
Chourio played 127 games this season due to injury and posted 4.9 wins above replacement. He has achieved 20 home runs and 20 stolen base seasons in three consecutive years. The Brewers signed him to a contract through the 2031 season with two club options extending to 2033. The Rays failed to score after the first inning of Game 2 and again in Game 3, leaving them down 3-0 with one game remaining in the series.
The Brewers' 7-0 postseason streak ties the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, though that team played a five-game divisional round. The Rays scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2 but fell 5-4. They have not scored since. Chourio's .571 average and three steals place him among the series leaders in offensive production.
