Lucie Kon, an Oscar and Emmy-winning producer, received a payment of more than £400,000 from the BBC. The settlement follows her claim that she was forced to leave the corporation after the October 7 attacks. Kon departed in April, just 19 days after winning her Academy Award.

Kon stated that her workplace treatment changed rapidly following the attacks. She recalled messaging a colleague on WhatsApp about the events in Israel. She described Hamas as evil. The colleague responded that Zionists were evil. Kon said the colleague treated the comparison like a joke. She called the remark tasteless given the timing.

When Kon raised concerns about the treatment of Jewish staff, another colleague added a condition. If Kon wanted to refer to Hamas as terrorists, she had to call Israel a terrorist state as well. Kon helped create an internal WhatsApp group for Jewish employees. She also wrote to then-Director General Tim Davie to raise her concerns.

Kon proposed a film about October 7 to a colleague who had made the earlier remark. The colleague dismissed the idea, saying enough films about Israel already existed. A manager later told Kon the project would proceed but needed context on why Hamas acted. Kon explained the film would focus on the day's events, not historical context. A higher manager later informed Kon she could no longer oversee the film.

The manager cited Kon's Jewish identity as the reason for the change. The manager stated Kon was partial. The film was reassigned to the colleague who had made the terrorist state comment. Kon filed a formal grievance. The BBC later moved that colleague to a different office. Kon was told she could not travel or commission for the BBC to avoid unfairness to her colleague.

The BBC did not uphold Kon's grievance. Staff told her that her colleagues did not remember certain statements. They also suggested the decision was due to concerns about her mental health. Kon appealed the decision but was unsuccessful. She continued working from home as her health deteriorated. After submitting a doctor's note for stress-related sick leave, the BBC placed her at risk of redundancy. She applied for a new role, was rejected, and was made redundant in April.

Kon brought unfair dismissal proceedings against the BBC. The corporation agreed to the payout without admitting liability. It also refused to apologize or admit Kon was a victim of antisemitism. She is the first known person to receive such a settlement from the BBC based on an antisemitism claim. A BBC spokesperson said the processes did not uphold Kon's allegations. The statement acknowledged shortcomings and the personal impact on Kon. The corporation described her as a valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service.
