The Walt Disney Co. and Channel 4 announced on Friday that the British broadcaster’s main channel and on-demand catalog will merge with Disney+ in the U.K. and Ireland. The integration begins in early 2027 and comes at no extra cost to existing subscribers. This move represents the most ambitious partnership between the two companies in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region.
Under the agreement, Disney+ users will access Channel 4’s linear high-definition channel alongside hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted content. Specific titles identified for day-and-date release include the drama Maya starring Bella Ramsey, the comedy Stepping Up featuring Denise Welch, and the reality series Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Other on-demand shows listed include Big Mood, Tip Toe, and 24 Hours in A&E. Channel 4 will occupy a branded section within the Disney+ app that mirrors the platform’s standard navigation and user experience.
Priya Dogra, CEO of Channel 4, stated that the collaboration is designed to meet evolving audience habits. She noted that consumers now seek content across multiple platforms, requiring Channel 4 to transform its distribution strategy. Dogra emphasized that the deal preserves Channel 4 branding while exposing its public service programming to a wider audience. She clarified that Channel 4’s owned and operated services remain the primary home for the majority of its programming.
Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ EMEA, described the local broadcaster partnership as a key driver for future growth. He reported that Disney+ subscriber numbers in the EMEA region increased by 30 percent over the last 18 months. Holmes attributed this growth partly to local originals and content from free-to-air partners. He stated that this specific deal is the culmination of lessons learned from previous partnerships with broadcasters in Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Spain.
The two companies previously struck agreements with ITV, Italy’s RAI, Germany’s ARD and ZDF, Portugal’s SIC, and Spain’s RTVE and Atresmedia. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has positioned Disney+ as the digital centerpiece of the company. The financial terms of the new Channel 4 pact were not disclosed.
BARB data indicates a demographic mismatch between the two platforms. Channel 4 attracts 17 percent of its viewers from the 16 to 34 age group, while Disney+ attracts 39 percent from that same bracket. Conversely, 63 percent of Channel 4’s viewing hours come from audiences aged 55 and older, compared to just 11 percent on Disney+. Holmes said the partnership aims to bring Channel 4’s high-profile shows to Disney’s younger audience base.
Both executives indicated the partnership could expand. Dogra noted that Channel 4 already licenses Disney properties such as The Simpsons and The Avengers. Holmes said the companies would continue to discuss potential evolutions of the agreement. Further details on launch timing and the full content list are expected in the coming months.
