The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the 2026 season on Sunday night in Seattle, ending a streak that had included a perfect start. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Chiefs 27-19, a result that altered the early standings in the AFC West. For fans of the visiting team, the primary concern shifted immediately to the receiving corps, which struggled against the Seahawks' secondary.

The Chiefs' offensive line and quarterback Patrick Mahomes faced a physical defense that limited the passing game. Mahomes completed 165 passing yards, his lowest total of the season. He has topped 250 yards in just one of his last four games and has not thrown a touchdown pass in either of his previous two outings. Fantasy analysts noted that his recent average has dropped to 12.4 points per game, making him a risky start for the upcoming matchup against Denver.

The receiving group produced only six catches for a total of 39 yards. This output came from a unit missing star Rashee Rice, who sat out with a strained right hamstring, and Tyquan Thornton, who is on injured reserve. The remaining targets, including Xavier Worthy, rookie Cyrus Allen, Justin Watson, Andrew Armstrong, and Jalen Royals, failed to generate separation. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is expected to look for trade options before the November 10 deadline.

Running back Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, played against his former team for the first time. Walker entered the game leading the league with 665 rushing yards but finished with 36 yards on 14 carries. The Seahawks deployed two deep safeties for much of the contest, preventing Walker from gaining more than 10 yards on any single carry. This defensive scheme effectively neutralized the most dangerous aspect of the Chiefs' ground attack.

Sam Darnold of the Seahawks threw for 257 yards and one touchdown in 20-of-28 passing. He did not get sacked, a change from the previous two weeks where he had taken five sacks per game. However, he threw his eighth interception in the last five games, a pick in the end zone during the final seconds of the first half that gave the Chiefs a field goal opportunity they failed to convert. Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the offense with 129 receiving yards in the first half, the most in his career in a single half.

The Chiefs return home to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET. The Seahawks will host the Chicago Bears on November 2 at 8:15 p.m. ET. Both teams look to bounce back from their respective issues, with Kansas City seeking to fix its passing attack and Seattle aiming to stabilize its quarterback position.

The loss drops the Chiefs to 6-1 on the season. The Seahawks improved to 4-3. The result marks the first time the Chiefs have dropped a contest since the 2025 season concluded.
